The Top Three Reasons People Seek Out Cosmetic Surgery in 2015
It’s 2015, and the number of people who choose to get plastic surgery procedures like facelift surgery, Botox treatments and more is still very much on the rise.
In 2011 alone, nearly 14 million Americans underwent some type of cosmetic procedure. Throughout 2013 — the most recent year with available data — 15.1 million people were getting plastic surgery, a significant increase.
So what are the top reasons why people choose to undergo a cosmetic surgery treatment today? Here are the biggest factors that lead to cosmetic and facelift procedures in the U.S.:
Dissatisfaction with one’s social media pictures
As the selfie has risen in popularity, so has the percentage of plastic surgeries that take place because of one’s dissatisfaction with their appearance in these pictures, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In 2013, there was a 10% increase in the number of rhinoplasty procedures that stemmed from patients’ self-consciousness over their appearance on social media.
Accidents or health conditions
Did you know that a major portion of cosmetic surgery is actually done for reconstructive purposes? If an individual is recovering from an accident, operation or illness that has altered his or her appearance, a surgery may be needed. In 2011, 5.5 million of the year’s total 14 million cosmetic surgeries were reconstructive in nature, a 5% increase from the previous year.
Increase one’s chances for career success
In many highly-competitive industries, even the way you look can have an impact on whether you get hired or not. As a result, both women and men in the country’s most competitive job sectors invest in cosmetic procedures to obtain a more youthful, fresh-faced appearance and look their best in the workplace.
